Tackling gender and wealth inequality

Gender and wealth inequality are issues too obvious to ignore in the technology industry today. In this article I explore some of the causes behind these problems and present possible solutions.

Gender inequality — calling for more humanity

While progress has been made to improve equality in the workplace, it’s well recognised that women are still significantly underrepresented within the technology industry.

In the broader context of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers, the balance between men and women working in technology falls heavily towards men, who make up 80% of the workforce. In the UK the figure is said to be even lower with women comprising only 15% of the STEM workforce. And of those in leadership positions, only 5% are women. This imbalance is not looking like it will improve any time soon either.

A recent report from PwC UK has revealed that ‘girls are less likely to study STEM subjects at school and this continues through university and into their careers’. The report shows that 86% of boys study STEM subjects at high school compared to 64% of girls. At University, STEM subjects are studied by 52% of men and 30% of women.
